Mobile Devices Get Adobe AIR 2.0 and New Flash Player

Adobe Systems previewed AIR 2.0 and Flash Player 10.1 for mobile devices at the Mobile World Congress. Adobe said AIR 2.0 is designed for high performance on small screens across a variety of mobile devices. Adobe’s Flash Player 10.1 supports high definition. Apple, Inc. does not support Flash, but apps can be ported to the iPhone and iPod touch.

AIR 2 builds on the success of AIR 1 by giving developers new capabilities, and even tighter integration with the desktop. Some new features of AIR 2 include:

  • Enhanced support for interacting with printers
  • Support for the detection of mass storage devices.
  • Support for TLS/SSL socket communication
  • The ability to open a file with its default application.
  • Advanced networking capabilities like secure sockets, UDP support, and the ability to listen on sockets.
  • Multi-touch and gesture support.
  • Support for native code integration.
  • New APIs for access to raw microphone data.
  • Global error handling.
  • Webkit update with HTML5/CSS3 support.
  • Improved security and support for enterprise and government standards.
  • Improved cross-platform printing
  • We expect to ship a beta version of Adobe AIR 2 on Adobe Labs by the end of the year. In the first half of 2010, we expect to ship the final version of AIR 2.
