The new Amazon Kindle 3 has been the most hyped eBook reader of the year.

Slimmer, more compact design than previous Kindle; improved screen with higher contrast and faster page turns; native PDF support; large library of hundreds of thousands of e-books, newspapers, magazines, and blogs via Amazon’s familiar online store; built-in free 3G wireless “Whispernet” data network, plus Wi-Fi; built-in keyboard for notes; with 4GB (3.3 usable) of internal memory, it’s capable of storing 3,500 electronic books; eight fonts available, including two new extra-large sizes; excellent battery life; displays image files, and plays MP3 and AAC audio.

First off, trying to decide which new Kindle 3 to buy is not easy. There’s a $50 difference in price between the WiFi only model and the 3G version. The Kindle WiFi sells from Amazon for $139 and the Kindle 3G sells for $189. The 3G Kindle comes with free wireless from AT&T that works in over 100 countries.

Kindle is #1 bestselling item for two years running. It’s also the most-wished-for, most-gifted, and has the most 5-star reviews of any product on Amazon. Now it’s even better.
Amazon Kindle 3All-New, High-Contrast E-Ink Screen – 50% better contrast;
Read in Bright Sunlight – No glare;
New and Improved Fonts – New crisper, darker fonts;
New Sleek Design – 21% smaller body while keeping the same 6″ size reading area;
15% Lighter – Only 8.7 ounces, weighs less than a paperback;
Battery Life of One Month – A single charge lasts up to one month with wireless off;
Double the Storage – Up to 3,500 Books;
Books in 60 Seconds – Download books anytime, anywhere;
Free 3G Wireless – No monthly payments, no annual contracts;
Built-In Wi-Fi – In addition to the 3G wireless, you can connect to Wi-Fi hotspots;
20% Faster Page Turns – Seamless reading;
Enhanced PDF Reader – With dictionary lookup, notes, and highlights;
New WebKit-Based Browser – Free 3G web browsing (experimental).

Kindle (Wi-Fi) is a great choice if you already have a high-speed internet connection and wireless router set up in your home and do not need the added convenience of a 3G connection. 3G enables you to download books anytime, anywhere, while on the go. If you do not have Wi-Fi set up in your home, Kindle 3G may be a better option. Kindle can connect to Wi-Fi networks or hotspots that use the 802.11b or 802.11g standard.

Kindle 3G (Free 3G + Wi-Fi) is the easiest option because there is no wireless setup—you are ready to shop, purchase, and read right out of the box. Built-in Free 3G connectivity uses the same wireless signals that cell phones use, but there are no monthly fees or commitments Amazon pays for Kindle’s 3G wireless connectivity. The added convenience of 3G enables you to download books anytime, anywhere, while on the go without having to find a Wi-Fi hotspot connection. With wireless coverage in over 100 countries and territories, Kindle 3G is a great option for travelers.

Just as Apple’s iPod wasn’t the first MP3 player, Amazon wasn’t the first company on the block to release an e-book reader; NuvoMedia’s RocketBook and the early Sony Readers both beat the Kindle to market. But it’s hard to argue that the online retailer’s Kindle isn’t the iPod of the e-book reader market. The Kindle has helped usher the e-book reader from gadget curiosity to a burgeoning mass market device, all in less than three short years. And now, amid a much more competitive market, Amazon is debuting the third-generation Kindle.

  1. Awesome, got mine a few months back. Absolutely love it. Kindle rules. The weight, the battery life, even the design is pretty slick (I got the graphite one). Another company finally figured out (besides Apple) how to seduce their customers with cool hardware. 😉
